Japanese Festival

Hello everyone.
We were done about Japanese Food and now we will proceed with Japanese Festival. 


Japanese festivals are traditionally festive occasions. Some festivals have their roots in Chinese festivals but have undergone dramatic changes as they mixed with local customs.  So, in this entry we will share some of the Japanese festival and how they celebrate it. 


Local festival which is known as MATSURI in Japan are usually held annually and celebrate the shrine's deity or a seasonal or historical event. Some festival are held over several days.


An important element of Japanese festivals are processions, in which the local shrine's kami (Shinto deity) is carried through the town in mikoshi (palanquins). It is the only time of the year when the kami leaves the shrine to be carried around town.


Every festival has its own characteristics. While some festivals are calm and meditative, many are energetic and noisy. Bellow are the some of the most famous festival celebrated by Japanese. 



1. Sapporo Snow Festival


Large snow and ice sculptures are built in the city's centrally located Odori Park during the Sapporo Snow Festival. This festival will be held in February for one week.



2. Omizutori


Omizutori is a Buddhist religions service rather than a festival, held every year at the Nigatsudo Hall of Todaiji Temple. The most soectacular among its many ceremonies is the nightly burning of torches on the balcony of the wooden temple hall.



3. Takayama Matsuri


Large and elaborately decorated floats are pulled through the old town of Takayama. Held in spring and autumn.




4. Sanja Matsuri


The festival of Asakusa Shrine, the Sanja Matsuri is one of Tokyo's three big festival. Mikoshi are carried through the streets of Asakusa. 



5. Kyo Gion Matsuri


The festival of Yasaka Shrine, Gion Matsuri is ranked as one of Japan's three best festivals, featuring over 20 mete tall festival floats. The highlight of the festival takes place on July 17.



6. Nebuta Matsuri


The Nebuta Matsuri features festival floats with huge lanterns, some measuring more than 10 meters. The festival attracts several million visitors every year. 



7. Kanto Matsuri


Over two hundred long bamboo poles with up to 46 lanterns attached to each are balanced by the members of this popular festival's nightly parades.



8. Awa Odori


This is the most famous of many traditional dancing festivals held across Japan during the obon season in mid August.



9. Nagasaki Kunchi


The festival of Nagasaki's Suwa Shrine, the Nagasaki Kunchi features Chinese style dragons and floats shaped like ships.



10. Jidai Matsuri


A spectacular historical parade which covers the over 1000 years during which Kyoto served as Japan's capital. The procession leads from Kyoto Imperial Palace to Heian Shrine. 



11. Chichibu Yomatsuri


The Chichibu Night Festival is considered one of Japan's three best festivals featuring large festival floats (yatai). The festival's highlight takes place in the evening of December 3.

Japanese Food Part III

Hello everyone. 
Today we want to share to you about other Japanese Food categories. The categories are Meat Dishes, Soya Bean Dishes, Yoshoku Dishes and many other dishes. 


Meat Dishes

Meat has been eaten in Japan in larger amounts only since the second half of the 19th century. Nowadays there are a variety of Japanese meat dishes.


1. Yakitori


Yakitori are grilled chicken pieces on skewers. Most parts of the chicken can be used for yakitori.








2. Tonkatsu


Tonkatsu are deep fried pork cutlets. Tonkatsu is usually served with shredded cabbage or on the top of cooked rice (katsudon) or with Japanese style curry rice (katsu kare).






3. Nikujaga


Nikujaga is a popular dish of home style cooking made of meat (niku) and potatoes (jagaimo)









Soya Bean Dishes 

Tofu, natto, miso and many other important ingredients of Japanese cooking are made of soya bean. The following are some of the most popular soya bean based dishes: 


1. Yudofu


Yudofu are tofu pieces boiled in a clear, mild soup and dipped into a soya based sauces before being eaten.








2. Agedashi Tofu


Agesashi Tofu are deep fried tofu pieces that are dipped into a soya based sauce before being eaten. 









3. Miso Soup


A bowl of miso soup often accompanies breakfast, lunch and dinner. It is made by dissolving miso paste in a hot water and adding additional ingredients such as wakame seaweed and small pieces of tofu.







Yoshoku Dishes 

A large number of Western dishes have been introduced to Japan over the centuries. Many of them have become completely Japanized and these dishes are now called Yoshoku dishes. Some of the most popular ones are:


1. Korokke


Korokke has its origins in the croquettes which were introduced to Japan in the 19th century. Korokke are breaded and deep fried and come in many varieties depending on the filling. The most common filling is a mix of minced meat and mashed potatoes.




2. Omuraisu


Omuraisu (abbreviation for omelet rice) is cooked rice, wrapped in a thin omelet and usually served with a gravy sauce or tomato ketchup.






3. Hayashi Raisu


Hayashi rice is Japanese style hashed beef stew, thinly sliced beef and onion in a demi-glace sauce served over or along side cooked rice. It resembles kare raisu and like kare raisu it is also eaten with a spoon.








4. Hamubago


Hamibago is a Japanese style hamburger steak. It is typically served on a plate and usually with demi-glace sauce but without a bun. 






Other Dishes


1. Tempura


Tempura is seafood, vegetables, mushroom and other pieces of food coated with tempura batter and deep  fried. Tempura was introduced to Japan by the Portuguese in the 16th century but was become one of Japan's most famous dishes internationally. 





2. Okonomiyaki


Okonomiyaki is a mix between pizza and pancake. Various ingredients such as seafood, vegetables and meat can be mixed with the dough and placed on the okonomiyaki as topping.





3. Monjayaki


Monjayaki is a Kanto region speciality that is similar to Okonomiyaki, however the dough used is much more liquid than the okonomiyaki dough. 





4.Gyoza


Gyoza are dumplings with filling usually made of minced vegetables and ground meat. Gyoza were introduced to Japan from China. In Japan gyoza are usually prepared by frying them. 






5. Chawanmushi


Chawanmushi is savory steamed egg custard that usually contains pieces of chicken, shrimp, fish cake and a ginko nut mixed inside.






6. Tsukemono


Tsukemono are Japanese pickles. There are many variety of pickles and a small dish of tsukemono is usually served with Japanese meals.
